ABOUT PHILLIPS HELMETS LTD.

Phillips Helmets Limited was founded in 1999 and owns the intellectual property rights to the Phillips Head Protection System (PHPS).

It was founded by Dr Ken Phillips, the inventor of the PHPS.  He originally conceived the idea as a result of discussions about helmet safety with his son, who was an avid motorcyclist and journalist for Which Bike magazine.

As a medical man, he recognised the brilliance of what nature had created in terms of protecting the brain.  Although the thick bone of the skull provided for direct protection, the skin on the outside acted as protection against rotation whenever the head received an impact.

He realised that conventional helmets only addressed the first half of the problem. Creating a “scalp” on the outside of a helmet would protect against rotation in the same way. He started to develop a lubricated membrane which would mimic the scalp and protect against rotation.

Recognising the huge potential implications of the PHPS innovation, he brought together an expert management team to develop and commercialise the concept.  Altogether it has taken 15 years and around £1 million to make PHPS a reality.

The company has successfully licensed Lazer Helmets SA to bring the first PHPS-enhanced motorcycle helmets to market. Phillips Helmets is expanding its activities to include equestrian and other sports helmets, industrial safety wear and protective headwear for military, law enforcement and recreational use.
