PHPS has significant potential to improve the performance of helmets designed to protect against traumatic head injury arising from motorcycle and motor vehicle accidents, work-related accidents and falls, and sports and recreational pursuits.

PHPS is already making a real contribution to reducing the numbers and severity of head injuries from motorcycle accidents; thus helping to reduce the risks of acquired brain injury and improving rider safety.

It has a similar potential within other areas such as:

Sports Head protection is essential in many sporting activities including F1, Rally Driving and Boxing. However, it is equestrian activities that have one of the highest risks or serious injury and death. The major cause of death and severe injury in horse riders is from head injury resulting from a fall from the horse. In fact head injuries account for approximately 60% of deaths in the equestrian field.

Industry Hard hats are vital in the industrial workplace. 46% of all workplace fatalities happen in construction and agriculture and falls from a height are the most common type of accident. It is here that head protection is key.

Military & Law Enforcement Head protection in the armed forces and law enforcement is extremely important as dangerous situations are part of the every day routine in this field. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is an important issue in today's military as the Iraq war has seen high levels of mild TBI especially in returning American troops.
